BUILDING SECTOR

  • The Taskforce Meeting of the Building Code (Energy Provisions-2011) was held to review the RFP for Developing Compliance Handbook through consulting firms and conduct of associated training programs in collaboration with Institute of Architects of Pakistan, PEC, PGBC etc.

  • JICA team is also supporting ENERCON to promote Energy Efficiency in Building Sector and is currently analyzing the Building Sector potential based on their data collection from various development authorities and developing analysis software which could be used in conjunction with the energy code parameters for energy efficient building design costing analysis. The meetings are being held with CDA officials for their capacity need assessments enabling them to start implementation of Building Energy Code and CDA has agreed to adopt some provisions and other Development Authorities are also considering the same.

  • KfW (German Development Agency) has shown willingness to develop a Green Public Sector building appliances replacement program with ENERCON, for submission to Green Climate Fund (GCF). Pak Secretariat Block billing data is being analyzed and all Energy Conservation Officers nominated under CCOEs decisions have been requested to share billing details and installed appliances data in their respective buildings enabling ENERCON to develop a large scale energy efficient appliances replacement/retrofitting program for GCF.

  • Thermal roof slab insulation project of 5-10 Houses in each climatic zone/all provinces of Pakistan is under development with UNHABITAT.

  • Project concept note on Greening of Public Buildings through Solarization and Building Energy Audits developed in consultation with UNIDO and submitted to GEF for Approval.

  • Project Concept on “Delivering the Transition to Energy Efficient Lighting in Residential, Commercial, Industrial and Outdoor Sectors in Pakistan” developed in consultation with UNEP enlighten initiative and approved by GEF. Three workshops have been carried out to finalize the project components which also include the development of smart lighting pilot projects with stakeholders before submission of detailed project document to GEF Head Quarters.

  • Under CCOE decision the Detail Energy Audits of Buildings on cost sharing basis are planned and the consulting firms’ engagement process has been initiated.

TIPS FOR BUILDING OWNERS/CONSTRUCTORS TO REDUCE YOUR ENERGY COSTS

Designing and Constructing energy efficient buildings & homes, and retrofitting your existing buildings can significantly conserve energy and reduce your energy bills.

  • Determine the orientation of the building on its site
  • Construct room sizes appropriate from energy stand point
  • Always opt for the following building and roof insulation
    • Mud Plaster
    • Asphalt roll roofing
    • Asphalt shingles
    • Built-up roofing
    • Slate
    • Reflective chemicals
  • Adopt wall paneling on the inside
    • Plywood paneling
    • Wood fiber
    • Gypsum board/dry wall
    • Lasani sheet
    • Wall paper
  • Whitewash the rooms for better use of lights
  • Put a wall section of 4 inch brick + 4 inch air space + 4 inch brick + 1 inch gypsum plaster outside whereas the air space should be filled with the following insulation
    • Cork
    • Gasket cork-sheet
    • Mineral wool blanket
    • Foam plastic
  • Use exhaust fans in kitchen/bathrooms
  • Landscape shading and solar heating absorbed through windows and roofs can increase your air conditioning use. Incorporating shading concept into your landscaping design can help reduce this solar heating gain, reducing your cooling cost.
  • Use false ceiling in the building.

  • Building sector is a major consumer of energy resources, with its lighting, heating and air-conditioning loads (especially in extreme climatic zones of the country).
  • ENERCON has demonstrated a potential of 30% savings in the building sector, through its pilot projects. The potential savings can be realized through energy efficient building designs and by retrofitting/modifying the existing buildings.
  • ENERCON had prepared a Building Energy Code in 1989, which was very well received by the builders and architects. The code is now being updated and will promote energy-efficient building design and retrofits
